Ski Locally, Listen Globally
Beamed from the tops of mountains
Music and skiing are and have been inseparable. Whether it is the soundtrack that fuels the drive to the hill, the schwaggy Dead bootleg that crackles out of the liftie’s boombox, or the silent rhythm in our heads as we ski, music is omnipotent. Remember The Blizzard of Aahhh’s soundtrack? Yeah, so do we. From the jibby park rat to the hippie teleskier, we all need our rhythm to get keep us on our game. So here’s a roundup of our favorite ski town radio, available on the internet, worldwide. Listen up.
From the deepest, dankest crinkle of Fort living at the Peruvian Lodge comes a community radio built for the Town of Alta. The brainchild of Mica Brownlie, also founder of the Alta Snowboard Team, Alta Radio is funded by Alta Community Enrichment. Based on the community radio format, Alta Radio prides themselves on providing their listeners with anything and everything. Among live shows and interviews, you’ll hear the out-the-window snow report, the avalanche report, and music that can flow from Led Zeppelin, to Muddy Waters, to LCD Soundsystem, to G. Love & The Special Sauce.
Soul, reggae, fusion and a bit of hip hop is what you’ll hear on this online station based out of the epicenter of Chilean skiing, Farellones. The music goes dead in the summer when the town empties out, but powers back up when the southern hemisphere winter fires up again when the lifts at nearby El Colorado start spinning.
Mellow ambiance featuring trance, ambient and lounge is what this Austrian based online station based out of the Tryolian ski town of Axams. Located just outside of Innsbruck, it is also close to the ski areas of Nordpark and Patscherkofel. The birth of this station was inspired by mellow summer nights with friends and is run by one guy, Harald Kinspergher, but we find it just as nice for a chill après ski ambiance after a powder day.
Mountain Radio Verbier
Transmitting in English and French this Verbier based digital station features music along with snow and trail reports and local news. You may not care about the piste report, and sometimes the playlist might be a bit too “poppy” but you can’t argue against the fact that Verbier is one of the most important ski resorts in the world, and this is the radio station they call their own.
Dub, rocksteady, reggae and ska, you’ll hear those and more on this feed from Vancouver based Scratch Radio. Vancouver is, of course, Canada’s largest ski town, with nearby Grouse Mountain 15 minutes from the city, Cypress Mountain 30 minutes away and Whistler just a bit farther up the road.
Grenoble, France based BuzzNCo plays a steady beat of reggae, ska and rock. Based at the foot of the Alps, it is a short drive to the resorts of the Chartreuse, including Les 7 Laux and Le Collet d’Allevard. Farther away are the mega-ski stations of Alpe d'Huez, and Les Deux Alpes.
